Bands

Gothic bands most people haven't heard of:

Ausgang

They used to be known as Kabuki and later called themselves Ausgang. My favorite song from them is "Weight", the ultimate punk song married to Roald Dahl and Edgar Allan Poe sensibilities.

Skeletal Family:

This is a band recalling Siouxsie and the Banshees (black clothing and similarly spiky-haired female lead) but less mainstream and popular. This is Siouxsie and the Banshees for those who find SATB too mainstream. My favorite song from them is "Promised Land", another favorite of mine is "She Cries".

Specimen

This band behind the Goth club Batcave and one of them, Jon Klein, went one to work for SATB. They're responsible for the song "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" recalls Roald Dahl to some degree because I can't remember it exactly, "The Beauty of Poison" and the lighter, bouncier "Indestructible". As Stylus describes them as a band closer to glam than Bauhaus doing covers of T-Rex and David Bowie. Pardon me Bauhaus fans.

Southern Death Cult

People know them better as the Cult but they started out as a Goth punk outfit called Southern Death Cult. Southern Death Cult, like its more famous incarnation, is popular at least in Goth and Deathrock circles. Below is Moya:

Gothic bands people are familiar with

The Cure

The most famous Goth band with the most number of non-Goth fans (as the creators of South Park count). They're a very accessible band and NME wrote about them in their Goth issue. In Stylus, they're constrasted with Depeche Mode as influential long running 80s bands.

Sisters of Mercy

Pete Scathe said that they're the first band in th second generation of Goth. They probably didn't have punk connections indirectly or directly. But their synthesizer drived music spawned a new generation of Goth bands and influenced SATB, tempting them to try this sound in the later half of the 1980s.

Joy Division

I don't get why are they so popular with Goth these days pardon to offend some but early on Goths hated them. They're better known as New Order, which led people to assume that both incarnations had connections to Nazism and WWII.

Bauhaus

Bela Lugosi's Dead and they're musically not dead despite they broke up in 1983.
